JD’s Fishing Charters is a locally owned and operated fishing and sightseeing business based out of Leigh and Sandspit. Run by Jason Donaldson, a friendly and experienced local skipper with over 30 years on the water, Jason’s been fishing since he was young and knows the Hauraki Gulf like the back of his hand. His focus is on relaxed, safe, and memorable days out – whether you’re after snapper, kingfish, granddaddy hapuka, maomao, golden snapper, or chasing seasonal tuna and marlin. Trips can include destinations such as Kawau Island, the Mokohinau Islands, Great Barrier, and anywhere in between. Known for being easy-going, flexible, and genuinely passionate about helping people enjoy the sea, Jason offers a proper Kiwi experience with every trip.

Confirm Your Booking
Once your deposit is received, your boat and departure spot are confirmed. Pickup locations are flexible and can include Leigh, Sandspit, or other arranged points

Head out at 7am, return around 4pm, and enjoy a full day fishing, sightseeing, and soaking in the best of the Hauraki Gulf.

Exterior Wash & Wax

Paint Decontamination

Sightseeing and Island Trips
Explore destinations like Kawau Island, Motuora Island, Great Barrier, or anywhere in between. Perfect for groups who want to relax, swim, and see the sights
Group Charters
Book the Forella or the Sunflower for your private group. Ideal for mates, families, or work outings. Pricing stays the same whether there are 6 or 10 people.
Individual Bookings
Solo fishers or small groups can book by the seat on either boat. Meet new people and enjoy a laid-back day of fishing and fun.
Flexible Pickup Locations
Depart from Leigh or Sandspit, or arrange pickups from Whangārei, the Viaduct, Great Barrier, or other spots by agreement.
Rod Hire and BYO
Bring your own rods or hire one for $20 per person. BYO is welcome as long as there’s a sober driver on board.
